New Construction Homes for Sale in Saint Cloud

St. Cloud is a city located in Osceola County on the southern shore of East Lake Tohopekaliga, approximately 26 miles from Orlando to the southeast via Florida’s Turnpike. At some point in the 1870s, Hamilton Disston, a native of Philadelphia, decided to invest in the development of the Saint Cloud area. Hamilton was a very successful industrialist and real estate developer in those days. Therefore, it is no surprise that in 1881 he went ahead with his plan, purchasing four million acres of land, an area more prominent than the total area of Connecticut, which three and a half million acres. A part of the property acquired was awarded to him for paying $1 million to the Florida Internal Improvement Fund in an attempt to offset debt accumulated during the Civil War and subsequent Reconstruction of Florida’s inhabited areas. The contract between Disston and the government guaranteed he could keep half of the land he successfully drained from the Florida swamps. Starting in 1886 through 1887, he had canals dug and established the Saint Cloud Sugarcane Plantation, which he named after Saint Cloud, Minnesota. Though it should be noted that many of the longtime locals hold the opinion Disston named it after Saint-Cloud, France, a suburb near France.
