New Construction Vacation Homes for Sale in Orlando

Before the establishment of Orlando, the 4th United States Artillery built Fort Gatlin, which was under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander C. W. Fanning, on November 9, 1838. The fort was only a part of a series of fortified encampments established during the Second Seminole War. The army named the fort in honor of an Army physician, Dr. John S. Gatlin, killed in Dade’s Massacre in 1835. In 1839, the fort was left abandoned by the United States military, leaving the surrounding area to settlers who began building the area up. The area of modern-day Orlando became known as Jernigan because of two brothers, Isaac and Aaron Jernigan, who purchased large tracts of land just northwest of Fort Gatlin. In 1845, Aaron Jernigan managed to become the first State Representative of Orange County. Out of the five stories about how the City of Orlando got its name, the most agreed upon one is from a tale about a man killed during an attack by the Seminole. A part of the story reads, “Here lies Orlando,” referring to his marked grave. Nevertheless, this tale cannot be proven as valid or not. In 1885, Orlando was finally established as a city.
